Frequently Asked Questions

The Project

Can I really use it for free?

Yes, the Lumabit project can be used without requiring any payment information. In recognition of the value provided, we do request contributions on a voluntary, pay what you can, basis.

What happens at the end of the annual renewal?

For continued support of the operations, we request a renewal once a year. At any point you can choose to increase or decrease your contribution amount.

Is Lumabit a non-profit?

No, we are run by a for-profit company - though profit is not the primary motive for the project. We would rather help as many learners as possible, aiming to provide access to quality education in a sustainable manner.

What does it mean to be Open data and Open source?

We believe in open knowledge and open code β€” anyone can use, adapt, and improve our work, as long as they share alike and give credit.

There are two main components to Lumabit:
1. the Content: meaning the curriculum, lesson plans, content and materials. These are released under a Creative Commons share-alike license (CC BY-SA 4.0). This means you can use, share, and adapt the content β€” even for commercial use β€” as long as you give credit and share any changes under the same license.
2. the Platform: meaning the website and application which provides the lesson interactivity. This is licensed under AGPL-3.0, which lets you use, change, and share the software freely, but requires the sharing of the resulting code. This is designed to keep the web-based software free for everyone.

This ensures that the content that underpins our application remains accessible independently of the service itself. See our Terms and conditions for more detail.

How can I contribute to the project?

There are many ways to support our project. We welcome feedback on content/lesson, or to our knowledge repositories directly. Companies and individuals may also sponsor a specific feature or lesson. Everyone can help by sharing it with schools or teachers in your community.
